A Trip to the Dentist? We Can’t Wait!

Why We Don’t Like to See the Dentist and What to Do About It

When was the last time you went to the dentist?  We all know you should go twice a year for preventative reasons.  However research shows that considering many don’t go to the dentist at all, the average frequency for dental visits is once every 1.5 to 2 years.

A lot can happen when it comes to your mouth in that amount of time.

So why do we put off going to the dentist? Everyone has their reasons, but we wanted to share the most often cited excuses for missing out on the dentist.  You may recognize some of the issues here, and perhaps you won’t feel so all alone.

Also, we’ve tried to give you a suggestion to overcome your fears.

Best of all, reading this information won’t hurt at all!  So sit back and relax!

Fear of Pain or Discomfort

One of the most commonly cited reasons people avoid dental visits is fear of pain. Whether it’s from childhood experiences or horror stories passed down by others, the thought of potential discomfort can keep people away.

How to Overcome It: Dentists today use modern techniques to make dental work as pain-free as possible. Modern sedation options and the latest technology reduce discomfort. If pain is a concern, discussing this with your dentist beforehand can help you find solutions to make the experience more comfortable.  At Shiloh Dental Services, our dentist Dr. Ruhi Patel is so friendly, you might just enjoy visiting for the friendly conversation and professional approach.

Cost Concerns

Dental care can be expensive, especially if you’re dealing with major issues or don’t have insurance. Even basic cleanings can feel like a burden to those on a tight budget. Many people avoid going to the dentist because they worry about the costs involved.

How to Overcome It: Many dental offices now offer flexible payment options or accept a range of insurance plans. If you’re without insurance, some practices, including ours at Shiloh Dental Services offer self-pay discounts or the ability to use a SuperBill to submit claims directly to your insurance. Preventive care, such as regular cleanings, can also help avoid costly treatments down the line.  Click here to learn more about how prevention can save money in the long term.

Dental Insurance

If cost is a concern for some without dental insurance, then how can having dental insurance be an issue?  Because it’s very confusing to understand.  Many people with dental insurance don’t know what it covers, what it doesn’t, or if it’s even accepted at their dentist of choice.  Even those with dental insurance may not see the dentist, just because of the hassle insurance can cause.

How to overcome it:  You can always call the insurance company, but even that can be confusing, if they answer your call at all.  While we can’t speak for everyone, we can say that if insurance is a concern, just call us.  We can work with you to help figure it out.

Anxiety About the Unknown

Not knowing what to expect can make a trip to the dentist anxiety-inducing. Plus, not knowing your dentist is an issue, especially these days with corporate dental outlets featuring multiple, often changing dentists.  This sense of unpredictability can cause many to postpone visits.

How to Overcome It: Building a relationship with a trusted dentist is key. Scheduling a consultation or introductory visit can help ease anxiety. Ask questions and get to know the staff so that you feel more comfortable in their care.  Here at Shiloh Dental Services, you’ll get to know the team, and your dentist, Dr. Ruhi Patel.  She’ll be your dentist, and she is someone you can trust.

Embarrassment About Oral Health

Some people avoid the dentist because they’re embarrassed about the state of their teeth or gums. They may feel self-conscious about cavities, yellowing, or other dental issues and worry about being judged.

How to Overcome It: Dentists are there to help, not judge. They’ve seen it all before and are focused on improving your oral health, not criticizing your past habits. Addressing these issues can make you feel much better about yourself and your dentist, making future trips to the dentist not so concerning.

Lack of Time

For some, it’s not fear or cost that keeps them away—it’s their busy schedules. Taking time off work or fitting a dental appointment into an already packed calendar can seem impossible.

How to Overcome It: Many dental offices now offer evening or weekend appointments to accommodate busy schedules. Prioritizing regular dental care can save time (and money) in the long run by preventing more serious issues that require longer, more frequent appointments.

It’s important to note that the most often given excuses for not going to the dentist can easily be overcome.  Don’t let these issues keep you from taking care of your oral health.  Find a trustworthy dentist, like Dr. Ruhi Patel here at Shiloh Dental Services, and don’t let anything keep you from prioritizing preventive oral health care.

Who knows?

You might just begin to love coming to the dentist!  It could happen!
